Comment sélectionner

Selecting an Ethernet switch IC in four steps

Topology first, then speed, then the supply rails, then package and thermals.

  1. 01

    Decide the port topology

Count the external ports you need, then decide whether the host has to send and receive traffic. If it does, you need a device with an uplink port.

  2. 02

    Choose 100M or gigabit

The range covers 100M and gigabit. There are no 2.5G or faster devices here, so if the design needs those speeds, say so at enquiry.

  3. 03

    Check the supply rails

Most devices need a low voltage core rail alongside the main supply. Confirm the rails and their sequencing before the power tree is fixed.

  4. 04

    Plan package and thermals

Packages run from QFN48 at 6 by 6 up to TQFP176 at 20 by 20 millimetres. Higher port counts concentrate more heat in one device.

Parameters

Reading switch IC specifications

Port notation and the supply requirement are the two figures most often misread.

01

Port notation

A figure such as 5+1 means five external ports plus one host uplink. A single figure such as 5 or 8 means external ports only, with no separate uplink.

02

Link speed

100M on the JL51xx series, gigabit on the JL61xx series. Every device also supports 10Base-T on copper for legacy links.

03

Uplink interface

MII on most devices with an uplink, RMII on the JL5104. Devices listed as NA have no dedicated host interface at all.

04

Supply rails

Typically a 3.3 volt main supply with a 1.1 volt core rail, or 1.1 volt alone on some gigabit parts. Missing a rail prevents the device starting.

05

Fibre support

1000Base-X appears on the JL6110 and on the S variants of the JL6107. Other devices in the range are copper only.

06

Temperature grade

NC and PC suffixes cover 0 to 70 degrees; NI and PI cover minus 40 to 85. Not every series offers both grades.

Comparer

Switch IC series side by side

Port count and uplink presence separate the series more than speed does.

Analyse de l’application

Where these switch ICs are used

Confirm the port topology, whether the host must manage traffic, and the environment.

Analyse de l’application

Embedded devices with a few ports

  • Confirm whether the host must join the network. If it does, choose a device with an uplink such as the 3+1 or 5+1 configurations.
Analyse de l’application

Unmanaged port expansion

  • Where the host does not need to send traffic, a device with external ports only is simpler and needs no uplink routing.
Analyse de l’application

Industrial switches with fibre uplink

  • Check which specific part supports 1000Base-X, then confirm the optical module and the supply rails the device needs.
Analyse de l’application

Cascaded multi-device designs

  • Two uplinks allow one to reach the host and one to cascade. Estimate cross-device traffic so the cascade link does not bottleneck.

Présentation de la catégorie

Reading port notation and choosing the topology

Almost every selection question on switch ICs comes down to the port notation and whether the host controller needs to be on the network.

01

What 5+1 actually means

The first figure is external ports facing the outside world. The figure after the plus is a host uplink, a dedicated interface for the controller on the same board. A device listed as 5 has five external ports and no uplink, so the host cannot send or receive traffic through it. That distinction eliminates half the range.

02

When you need an uplink

If the product only has to move traffic between its own front panel ports, a device with external ports only is simpler and cheaper to lay out. If the host has to participate, for management, for remote access or because it originates data, you need an uplink and the host must provide the matching MII or RMII interface.

03

The supply rails catch people out

Most devices here need more than one rail: commonly 3.3 volts for the main supply and around 1.1 volts for the core, and some gigabit parts run the core alone. Missing a rail, or sequencing them wrongly, prevents the device starting. Confirm the rails and sequence before the power tree is committed.

FAQ

Ethernet switch IC questions engineers ask

Answers cover port notation, uplinks, supply rails and fibre support.

When is eight ports with no uplink the right choice?

When the product needs a relatively high port count on the panel and the host controller has no reason to join the network. It keeps the design simple, with no uplink interface to route or configure. If management or host traffic is required, compare the 8+1 or 8+2 configurations.

What does eight ports demand from the layout?

Each copper port needs its own magnetics and a controlled impedance differential pair to the connector, so board area grows quickly. Plan the panel arrangement and the magnetics placement before placing the device, and keep the pairs matched in length and spacing.

Does higher port count mean more heat?

Generally yes, because more active ports means more power in one package. Follow the datasheet thermal pad guidance, provide adequate copper and via stitching, and measure the case temperature at full load in the real enclosure at the highest rated ambient.

How does it compare with JL5109?

Both provide eight external ports. JL5108 has no uplink and comes in QFN64 at 9 by 9 millimetres. JL5109 adds an MII host uplink in a larger QFN88 at 10 by 10. The decision is whether the host needs to be on the network.

How do I request samples or a quote?

With a complete part number, send the part number, quantity, delivery region and the date you need it. If you are still selecting, send the external port count and confirm whether the host needs to be on the network.
