Under proper use, a high-quality RJ45 coupler introduces an insertion loss typically <0.3 dB, with almost no effect on rates of 1 Gbps and below. However, a poor-quality coupler may cause wire-pair separation and impedance discontinuity (producing reflections) due to internal contact misalignment, shortening the effective transmission distance by 10-20 m. In 10 Gbps applications the coupler's impact is more significant; it is recommended to avoid using one or to choose a shielded CAT6A coupler, keeping total insertion loss within 1 dB.
Unshielded couplers are suitable for indoor short-distance cable joining and extension—low cost and small size. Shielded couplers (metal housing + internal shielding isolation) are suitable for environments with EMI/RFI interference such as industrial sites and outdoor cabinets; the metal housing can form a continuous shielding path with the shield of shielded cabling. Note: shielded cabling must be used at both ends, otherwise the shielded coupler may instead become an antenna.
A 4-conductor coupler connects only pins 1, 2, 3, 6 (the 2 differential pairs required for 100M Ethernet), while an 8-conductor full coupler connects all 8 pins. A 100M network (100BASE-TX) works with 4 conductors, but gigabit (1000BASE-T) must use 8 conductors. PoE power delivery also requires 8 conductors (powering over the data pairs or the spare pairs). It is recommended to standardize on 8-conductor full couplers to avoid compatibility issues.
