Topology first, then speed, then the supply rails, then package and thermals.

Decide the port topology
Count the external ports you need, then decide whether the host has to send and receive traffic. If it does, you need a device with an uplink port.

Choose 100M or gigabit
The range covers 100M and gigabit. There are no 2.5G or faster devices here, so if the design needs those speeds, say so at enquiry.

Check the supply rails
Most devices need a low voltage core rail alongside the main supply. Confirm the rails and their sequencing before the power tree is fixed.

Plan package and thermals
Packages run from QFN48 at 6 by 6 up to TQFP176 at 20 by 20 millimetres. Higher port counts concentrate more heat in one device.

Reading switch IC specifications
Port notation and the supply requirement are the two figures most often misread.
Link speed
100M on the JL51xx series, gigabit on the JL61xx series. Every device also supports 10Base-T on copper for legacy links.
Uplink interface
MII on most devices with an uplink, RMII on the JL5104. Devices listed as NA have no dedicated host interface at all.
Supply rails
Typically a 3.3 volt main supply with a 1.1 volt core rail, or 1.1 volt alone on some gigabit parts. Missing a rail prevents the device starting.
Fibre support
1000Base-X appears on the JL6110 and on the S variants of the JL6107. Other devices in the range are copper only.
Temperature grade
NC and PC suffixes cover 0 to 70 degrees; NI and PI cover minus 40 to 85. Not every series offers both grades.

Embedded devices with a few ports
- Confirm whether the host must join the network. If it does, choose a device with an uplink such as the 3+1 or 5+1 configurations.
Unmanaged port expansion
- Where the host does not need to send traffic, a device with external ports only is simpler and needs no uplink routing.
Industrial switches with fibre uplink
- Check which specific part supports 1000Base-X, then confirm the optical module and the supply rails the device needs.
Cascaded multi-device designs
- Two uplinks allow one to reach the host and one to cascade. Estimate cross-device traffic so the cascade link does not bottleneck.

What 5+1 actually means
The first figure is external ports facing the outside world. The figure after the plus is a host uplink, a dedicated interface for the controller on the same board. A device listed as 5 has five external ports and no uplink, so the host cannot send or receive traffic through it. That distinction eliminates half the range.
When you need an uplink
If the product only has to move traffic between its own front panel ports, a device with external ports only is simpler and cheaper to lay out. If the host has to participate, for management, for remote access or because it originates data, you need an uplink and the host must provide the matching MII or RMII interface.
The supply rails catch people out
Most devices here need more than one rail: commonly 3.3 volts for the main supply and around 1.1 volts for the core, and some gigabit parts run the core alone. Missing a rail, or sequencing them wrongly, prevents the device starting. Confirm the rails and sequence before the power tree is committed.

What is JL6105 suited to?
Gigabit port expansion where the host controller does not need to be on the network. Five external ports at gigabit speed in a QFN88 package covers small switch modules and internal expansion. If the host must send or receive traffic, compare the JL6107 with its two uplinks.
What changes going from 100M to gigabit?
Signal integrity requirements tighten on the differential pairs, magnetics must be rated for gigabit, and power consumption rises. The layout has less tolerance for impedance discontinuities and length mismatch. Plan for the extra thermal load and verify link quality on a prototype.
What supply does it need?
It is listed as running from a 1.1 volt core rail. Confirm the rail, its tolerance and the required sequencing from the datasheet before the power tree is fixed, because a device of this type will not start at all if the core supply is absent or arrives in the wrong order.
How does it compare with JL6107?
JL6105 has five external gigabit ports and no uplink, in QFN88 at 10 by 10 millimetres. JL6107 adds two uplinks and comes in LQFP128 at 14 by 14, with fibre support on its S variants. Decide first whether the host needs to join the network.
