In data communication systems, the selection of physical layer components directly affects port signal integrity, reliability, and cost. From 10G/25G ports in core switches, to PoE powering and lightning protection in industrial outdoor equipment, and to optical-electrical interconnection interfaces in data centers – each scenario imposes specific and often stringent requirements on transformers, connectors, and protection devices.
VOOHU Electronics (VOOHU) addresses these scenarios with products including Lan Transformers, common-mode chokes, RJ45/SFP Connectors, TVS/ESD/GDT protection devices, complemented by JLSemi PHY and switching chips, covering the complete link from signal isolation and common-mode rejection to interface protection.
This article examines three typical applications and outlines key component selection considerations for hardware engineers.
Ethernet Overview
Ethernet has become the standard for local area network communication. From its early 10Mbps coaxial cable transmission to today's 400Gbps or even 800Gbps optical fiber communication, Ethernet technology continues to evolve around three core objectives: higher data rates, lower latency, and stronger environmental adaptability.
Current Ethernet faces two critical challenges: first, high-speed signal integrity – when single-lane rates exceed 56Gbps, signal attenuation, crosstalk, and reflections become significantly worse; second, stability in complex electromagnetic environments – harsh conditions such as industrial sites and outdoor base stations (strong EMI, wide temperature variations, humidity, dust) impose higher demands on passive components like connectors and transformers.
Applications in Data Communication
Core Network Equipment: High-Speed Interconnect & Signal Integrity Assurance
In core routers, high-end switches, and telecom equipment, Ethernet port rates typically range from 10Gbps, 25Gbps, 40Gbps to 100Gbps. The key requirements for such equipment are signal fidelity and long-term stability.

High-speed Ethernet signals are extremely sensitive to physical layer components. As a critical port component, the Lan Transformer must perform three functions: first, electrical isolation to break ground loops and protect the PHY chip; second, common-mode noise rejection to filter out electromagnetic interference introduced by the cable; third, impedance matching to ensure complete signal transmission over the 100Ω differential impedance. Improper design leads to eye closure, increased bit error rate, and ultimately port dropouts or throughput collapse.
Furthermore, core equipment often adopts high-density port designs, imposing constraints on component size and heat dissipation. Discrete solutions (x’fmr + CMC) allow flexible layout, while integrated Lan Transformers reduce the PCB design cycle time.

The WHLC series integrates a CMC, while the WHLT series integrates a transformer + CMC, supporting speeds from 100M to 10G. They are suitable for space-constrained high-speed Ethernet interfaces such as IPCs, industrial cameras, embedded network cards, and more.

Industrial & Outdoor Access: PoE Powering & Environmental Robustness
For outdoor equipment such as industrial switches, communication base stations, and security monitoring nodes, Ethernet ports must simultaneously address data transmission and device powering. Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology transmits DC power over twisted-pair cables, eliminating additional power cabling and reducing deployment costs.

PoE imposes special requirements on port components: the transformer must support a significant DC bias current without saturation while maintaining good high-frequency transmission characteristics; the connector must handle temperature rise due to current and ensure reliable contact. Outdoor scenarios additionally demand waterproof, dustproof, and surge withstand capability – the RJ45 Connector must meet IP67 or higher protection ratings, with a shielded housing and sealing gasket to block moisture ingress; the port side must integrate TVS diodes or gas discharge tubes to divert lightning-induced surges and protect downstream circuits.
Protection Device Series:
For ESD protection and lightning surge suppression on Ethernet ports, VOOHU recommends the following models: WHET5V-20K-SOT (5V low-capacitance ESD, SOT package), WHET3V3-30K-SOD (3.3V low-capacitance ESD, SOD package), WHE3G901P5-SMD (90V gas discharge tube, SMD), WHE2G90P5-SMD (90V GDT, alternate package), WHPM82-14D (varistor, D14). These devices can be used individually or in combination, meeting IEC 61000-4-2/4-5 standards, and are suitable for port protection in switches, industrial routers, outdoor base stations, and other equipment.
PoE Transformer Series:
To meet PoE power delivery requirements, VOOHU recommends the following models: ST0873WH (EP7, 10W/12V), ST1013WH (EP10, 10W/13.5V), ST1319WH (EP13, 13W/5V), WHTS15EFXXX (EFD15 series, 10W/3.3V), WHTS20EFXXX (EFD20 series, 100W/12V), and WHTS25EFXXX (EFD25 series, customizable). This series covers a power range of 5W to 100W, supports output voltages such as 12V, 5V, and 3.3V, and is suitable for PoE switches, powered devices (IPCs, APs, VoIP), and industrial IoT gateways.

High-Speed Data Center & Fiber Access: Optical-Electrical Synergy & Density Optimization
East-west traffic inside data centers has surged, driving switch ports toward 100G/400G evolution. When electrical signal rates exceed 56Gbps, copper cable transmission distance drops sharply, making optical interconnect the mainstream solution. SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) series optical modules – including SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28 – perform optical-electrical conversion via standardized interfaces, support hot-plugging, and facilitate on-site maintenance and bandwidth upgrades.

As the mechanical and electrical interface between the optical module and the equipment, the SFP Connector must ensure contact reliability after repeated insertions and enable complete transmission of high-speed differential signals within a limited space. High-density deployment in data centers further requires the connector to have precise guide structures and EMI shielding design to avoid crosstalk between adjacent ports.
SFP Connector Series:
For equipment requiring optical module interfaces, VOOHU recommends the following SFP Connector models: WHSFP00111W058 (SFP cage, 1×1, press-fit, with ventilation holes), WH81-111-Y0013-1 (SFP+ cage, 1×1, solder type, no LEDs), and WHSFP30211W018 (SFP28 cage, 1×1, press-fit, with heat sink). These products cover rates from 1G to 25G, support press-fit or solder mounting, are compatible with standard SFP/SFP+/SFP28 optical modules, and are suitable for applications such as switches, fiber optic transceivers, and data center network cards.

Optical Ethernet Chip Series:
For optical Ethernet applications, JLSemi recommends the following PHY/switching chips: 2201C Series (Gigabit PHY, supports SGMII, configurable to 1000BASE-X optical mode), 4201 Series (2.5G PHY, supports 2500BASE-X optical, suitable for PON and industrial optical communication), and 6110 Series (Gigabit switching chip, 8+2 ports, supports SGMII/H-SGMII uplink, can connect to external optical modules). When combined with VOOHU SFP Connectors and Lan Transformers, these chips enable rapid optical Ethernet design.

The above outlines key component selection points for three typical scenarios in data communication. In actual designs, adjustments must be made based on the specific PHY chip, PCB layout, EMC requirements, and other factors.
