D12 Metal Oxide Varistors

D12 refers to the nominal twelve millimetre disc diameter. It suits boards where a larger disc will not fit, at the cost of energy handling. Confirm the varistor voltage against worst-case line conditions and check the clamping figure at your real surge current.

FAQ

Metal oxide varistor questions engineers ask

Answers cover how a varistor works, ageing, failure modes and coordination.

What does D12 refer to?

The nominal disc diameter of the ceramic body, about twelve millimetres. It is a mechanical classification used to filter by size and footprint. The actual dimensions, lead spacing and recommended mounting come from the datasheet for the specific part, not from the size code alone.

How much energy will a D12 part absorb?

Less than a larger disc of the same voltage class, because absorption scales with the volume of ceramic available to take the heat. How much less depends on the specific part, so compare the rated surge current and energy figures at the same waveform rather than inferring from diameter.

When should I move up from D12?

When the surge class the installation must meet exceeds what a D12 part is rated for, or when the derating curve shows the part will not survive the expected number of events over its service life. Check the board has room for the larger disc and lead spacing before changing.

Does a smaller disc clamp differently?

Clamping voltage depends mainly on the voltage class rather than the diameter, so two parts of the same class clamp at broadly similar levels. What changes with size is how much energy the part can take before it degrades. Compare the clamping figure at your actual surge current.

How do I request samples or a quote?

With a complete part number, send the part number, quantity, delivery region and the date you need it. If you are still selecting, send the line voltage and type, the surge standard you must meet and the available board space, and a sales engineer will confirm candidates.
