5 PIN Audio Transformers

The fifth pin brings out a tap partway along a winding, which is what a balanced feed or a phase-splitting stage needs. Check which winding the tap belongs to before you lay out the board, then compare impedance, turns ratio and dielectric strength across candidates.

Pin count sets the winding taps and the board footprint, so start from the circuit you have.

Series overview

5-pin audio transformers with a tapped winding

A 5-pin audio transformer is a surface-mount audio or line transformer with one extra pin, a tap on one winding, for circuits that need a midpoint. It is also called a center tap audio transformer. All share a 14.5 mm body length, with widths of 8.2 or 8.5 mm, heights of 4.8 mm to 5.08 mm and 500 VAC or 1,000 VAC hi-pot. For plain two-winding coupling see 4-pin audio transformers; for taps on both windings see 6-pin audio transformers.

01

1,000 VAC or 500 VAC hi-pot

WHTT5005, WHTT5001 and WHTT5000 list 1,000 VAC hi-pot, and WHTT5003 and WHTT5002 list 500 VAC. If the tapped winding faces an external line or another ground, an audio isolation transformer rated 1,000 VAC is the place to start.

02

Turns ratio

WHTT5003, WHTT5002 and WHTT5001 are 1:1 at ±1%, WHTT5005 at ±2%. WHTT5000 lists a ratio of 2 at ±1% and a rated impedance ratio of 300:600 in the selector; confirm its winding direction before layout.

03

Winding resistance

DC resistance is 45 Ω and 55 Ω for WHTT5003, 65 Ω and 75 Ω for WHTT5005, 138 Ω and 130 Ω for WHTT5001 and 120 Ω and 250 Ω for WHTT5000; WHTT5002 lists one figure per winding section.

04

Body size

WHTT5001 and WHTT5000 measure 14.5 × 8.2 × 4.8 mm, WHTT5005 14.5 × 8.2 × 5 mm, and WHTT5003 and WHTT5002 14.5 × 8.5 × 5.08 mm. Pad layouts may still differ, so use each datasheet’s footprint.

Applications

5-pin audio transformers in real circuits

These parts sit where a circuit needs a midpoint.

Paging

Balanced line outputs

Paging and conference amplifiers drive long balanced lines; a center tap transformer with the tap grounded gives both legs a common reference. WHTT5001, 1:1 with 1,000 VAC hi-pot, is one candidate; check where its tap sits.

Telephony

Line feed and hybrid circuits

Telephone and intercom interfaces use a tapped telecom transformer to feed loop current or build a two-wire to four-wire hybrid. Before routing DC through the tap, confirm the datasheet allows it and the halves stay balanced.

Microphones

Phantom-powered microphone inputs

A 5-pin audio transformer on a microphone input that carries 48 V phantom power needs care with taps and DC. Our phantom power article explains which connections pass phantom, which block it and what a tap changes.

Sourcing

Ordering 5-pin audio transformers from VOOHU

VOOHU manufactures audio transformers in its own magnetics factory in Mianyang. Each 5-pin part has a datasheet, 3D model and PCB footprint, so you can check where the tap lands on your board.

01

Samples and quotation

Samples are available for evaluation, and selected parts are free of charge. Our FAE team will be glad to confirm the options for your project. For a quotation, give part number, yearly quantity and target delivery month; typical lead time is 7–10 days.

02

Alternatives to a tapped part you use now

Send the part number and datasheet of the tapped audio transformer you want to replace. Our FAE team compares turns ratio, tap position, DC resistance, hi-pot and footprint, then suggests VOOHU candidates to validate with samples before production.

03

Quality and company

VOOHU is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. Since 2018 VOOHU has supplied more than 1,500 customers, including 150+ listed companies. Every 5-pin audio transformer here is produced in Mianyang.

FAQ

5-pin audio transformer questions

Manufacturing, DC resistance figures and the step to 6-pin parts.

What is the fifth pin for?

It brings out a tap partway along one of the windings, most often the centre. A centre tap gives you a reference point between the two halves of a winding, which is what balanced drive and phase-splitting stages rely on. Which winding carries the tap varies by part, so read the pinout.

Which winding does the tap belong to?

That depends on the part number and must be read from the datasheet pinout. It is not something you can infer from the package. Assuming the tap sits on the wrong winding will put the reference point in the wrong place and the stage will not behave as the schematic expects.

Do I have to connect the centre tap?

No. If the circuit does not need it, the tap can be left unconnected and the part behaves as a two-winding transformer. Keep the unused pin isolated from adjacent nets on the board, and confirm from the datasheet that the part permits leaving it open.

How does a 5 PIN part compare with 4 PIN?

Electrically the windings do the same job. The difference is access: five pins expose a tap that four pins do not. If the schematic has no node that needs the tap, a four-pin part is simpler to lay out. Compare impedance, turns ratio and dielectric strength either way.

How do I request samples or a quote?

With a complete part number, send the part number, quantity, delivery region and the date you need it. If you are still selecting, send the source and load impedance, signal level, frequency range and whether you need a centre tap, and a sales engineer will confirm candidates.

Who manufactures the 5-pin audio transformers on this page?

VOOHU does. It manufactures them in its own magnetics factory in Mianyang, China, alongside 4-pin and 6-pin types; quote the full part number when you request samples, since each has its own datasheet.

Why does WHTT5002 list three DC resistance values?

A tap on one winding leaves three sections to measure, so the selector gives 90.5 Ω, 112 Ω and 102 Ω for WHTT5002. Match each figure to its pins in the datasheet before estimating losses or tap balance.

When do I need a 6-pin audio transformer instead?

When both windings need a tap, for example a balanced input and a balanced output on one part; a 5-pin part taps one winding only. Our 6-pin audio transformer page also lists parts with higher hi-pot ratings.
