Low Height RJ45 Connectors

Low height housings reduce the clearance needed above the board, for slim enclosures and stacked assemblies where a standard jack will not fit. Confirm the panel cutout position moves with the body height before finalising the enclosure.

How to select

Selecting a network connector in four steps

Contact count, then orientation and height, then shielding, then magnetics.

  1. 01

    Fix the contact count

RJ45 uses eight contacts for Ethernet, often written 8P8C. RJ11 uses four or six for telephony and low speed serial. They are not interchangeable.

  2. 02

    Choose the orientation

Vertical, right angle or offset, depending on whether the cable enters the panel horizontally and where the board sits behind it.

  3. 03

    Check the height

Low height variants exist for slim assemblies. Confirm the clearance above the board as well as the panel cutout before selecting.

  4. 04

    Decide shielding and magnetics

Shielded housings help emissions and need a defined chassis path. Integrated magnetics save board area but fix the transformer choice.

Parameters

Reading network connector specifications

Contact count and mounting orientation decide fit; shielding decides emissions.

01

Contact count

Eight for RJ45, four or six for RJ11. The housings differ in width and keying, so an RJ11 plug fits an RJ45 jack but not the reverse.

02

Orientation

Vertical, right angle or offset. Offset variants shift the opening relative to the board so the panel cutout can sit at a different height.

03

Mounting

Through hole gives mechanical strength for repeated plugging. Surface mount suits automated assembly but usually needs additional retention.

04

Height

Low profile variants reduce the clearance needed above the board. Confirm both the body height and the panel cutout position together.

05

Shielding

A shielded housing gives the cable screen a path to chassis. It needs a defined ground connection on the board to be effective.

06

Integrated magnetics

Some RJ45 housings contain the LAN transformer. That saves board area but fixes the magnetics specification inside the connector.

Compare

RJ45 against RJ11 and combination housings

Contact count and mechanical keying separate what looks like one family.

Application review

Where these connectors are fitted

Confirm the link speed, the panel arrangement and the height available on the board.

Application review

Ethernet ports on equipment panels

  • Confirm the link speed, then choose shielding and magnetics to match. Verify the panel cutout against the housing drawing.
Application review

Telephony and low speed serial

  • RJ11 with four or six contacts. Confirm which contacts the application uses before selecting between the two.
Application review

Slim and height constrained products

  • Low profile variants reduce clearance above the board. Check the panel cutout height matches the new body position.
Application review

Multi-port panels

  • Ganged or stacked housings save panel width. Confirm the pitch, the board footprint and the routing space behind each port.

Category overview

RJ45, RJ11 and what the housing decides

These connectors look like one family, but contact count, shielding and integrated magnetics each change what the port can do.

01

RJ45 and RJ11 are not one family

RJ45 carries eight contacts, often written 8P8C, and is the Ethernet connector. RJ11 carries four or six in a narrower housing for telephony and low speed serial. An RJ11 plug will physically enter an RJ45 jack because it is narrower, which is a frequent source of confusion, but an RJ45 plug will not fit an RJ11 jack.

02

Shielding only works if it is grounded

A shielded housing gives the cable screen somewhere to terminate, which helps emissions and immunity. It only does that if the board provides a defined low impedance path from the housing to chassis. A shielded connector wired to a floating shell can perform worse than an unshielded one, so plan the ground path early.

03

Integrated magnetics is a trade

An RJ45 with the LAN transformer built into the housing saves board area and shortens the differential routing, which helps signal integrity. The trade is that the magnetics are fixed inside the part: you cannot change the transformer without changing the connector, and the speed is set at selection time.

FAQ

Network connector questions engineers ask

Answers cover RJ45 against RJ11, shielding, magnetics and mounting choices.

How much height do these save?

The saving against a standard housing is stated on each drawing rather than being uniform across the range. Compare the body height dimension directly between the standard and low height part you are considering, and check it against the clearance the enclosure actually allows.

Does a lower body change the panel cutout?

Yes, and this is the step most often missed. Reducing the body height moves the port opening relative to the board, so the panel aperture has to move with it. Check both the body height and the opening position on the drawing before the enclosure is tooled.

Is mechanical strength reduced?

A smaller housing has less material to resist the force of repeated plugging and cable strain. If the port is user accessible and will be plugged often, check the retention features on the drawing and consider whether the design needs additional mechanical support.

Can I still get shielding and magnetics?

Availability varies by part, because a lower body leaves less internal volume for magnetics in particular. Check the specific part number rather than assuming every option carries across from the standard range. Send your requirement if you need a particular combination.

How do I request samples or a quote?

With a complete part number, send the part number, quantity, delivery region and the date you need it. If you are still selecting, send the clearance available above the board, the panel aperture position and the expected mating cycles.
