The JL5106 Ethernet switch IC gives a host processor a place on the network through MII and adds five external 100M copper ports. What is JL5106 suited to?
Products that need several front panel ports and a host controller on the network, such as small managed switches and industrial gateways. Five external ports plus an MII uplink covers both requirements in one device, at the cost of a larger package than the 3+1 configuration.
What does the MII uplink require?
A host controller providing MII at 3.3 volts. MII uses more signals than RMII, so allow for the extra routing and pay attention to clock to data timing and a continuous reference plane. Confirm the interface voltage matches before committing to the device.
How does it compare with JL5104?
Both have a host uplink, but they differ in port count, uplink type and package. JL5104 offers three external ports with RMII in a QFN48 at 6 by 6 millimetres. JL5106 offers five external ports with MII in a QFN64 at 9 by 9. Match both to your requirement.
What supply rails does it need?
A 3.3 volt main supply together with a core rail around 1.1 volts, with the sequencing stated in the datasheet. Confirm both rails exist in your power tree before layout, because a missing core rail prevents the device from starting.
How do I request samples or a quote?
