Series overview

2012 common mode choke options for CHIP LAN

A 2012 common mode choke in a CHIP LAN design sits on the differential pairs of a capacitively coupled Ethernet port, where coupling capacitors replace the transformer. They are also called chip LAN common mode chokes or 0805 common mode chokes. All use the 2012 (0805 inch) body and are listed for non-PoE 100/1000BASE-T ports. For an isolated port, use a 3532A chip LAN transformer; for PoE, a 4532B PoE chip LAN transformer.

01

Lower and higher impedance

Lower- and higher-impedance options share the same 2012 body, from WHLC-2012A-900T0 at the low end to WHLC-2012A-122T0 at the high end. More impedance suppresses common mode noise harder but adds differential insertion loss.

02

Role in a Cap+CMC port

Coupling capacitors block DC between the PHY and the cable, and the choke filters common mode noise. Nothing in this circuit gives magnetic isolation, so first confirm that your PHY reference design allows capacitive coupling.

03

Shortlisting in the selector

Size, classification, data rate and PoE label are the same across the range, so filter on impedance first and shortlist neighboring steps to compare on the board.

04

Package and assembly

The 2012 (0805 inch) SMD body suits standard pick-and-place and reflow. Keep each choke close to its coupling capacitors, route the pair symmetrically, and use the footprint file of the exact part number.

Applications

Where 2012 common mode chokes are designed in

They suit Ethernet links that need no galvanic isolation and whose PHYs support capacitive coupling.

In-chassis links

Backplane and board-to-board Ethernet

Links between boards in one enclosure, over a backplane or a short internal cable, can run capacitively coupled when both PHYs allow it. A mid-range part such as WHLC-2012A-361T1 is a sensible first candidate.

Compact devices

Space-limited consumer and IoT boards

Where board area is tight and the port needs no isolation, 2012 (0805 inch) chokes in a Cap+CMC circuit can be used instead of a chip transformer, once the PHY reference circuit allows it.

EMC testing

Comparing values in pre-scans

In EMC pre-scans, engineers often try neighboring impedance steps side by side, such as WHLC-2012A-381T0 and WHLC-2012A-801T0. Keep the PHY settings unchanged between runs.

Sourcing

Sourcing 2012 common mode chokes from VOOHU

VOOHU manufactures these 2012 common mode chokes in its own magnetics factory in Mianyang. Every part number comes with a datasheet, a 3D model and a PCB footprint for your layout check.

01

Samples and quotations

Samples are available for evaluation, and selected parts are free of charge. Our FAE team will be glad to confirm the options for your project. For a quotation, list the part numbers and quantity; typical lead time is 7–10 days.

02

Replacing an existing choke

If another supplier’s choke is already on your board, send its part number and datasheet. Our FAE team compares impedance, test frequency, DC resistance and footprint, then proposes VOOHU candidates to validate with samples before production.

03

VOOHU is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. Since 2018 VOOHU has supplied more than 1,500 customers, including 150+ listed companies. Production stays in its Mianyang magnetics factory.

FAQ & related guides

Common questions on 2012 common mode chokes

Who makes these chokes, how to step through impedance, and how they compare with the 3216 range.

Is the 2012 CHIP LAN companion component a capacitor?

No. The WHLC-2012A datasheet identifies it as a common mode choke. A capacitively coupled circuit may need separate capacitors and other components. Check the complete BOM rather than treating a circuit name as the internal structure of one part.

Is 1200 Ω always better than 90 Ω?

No. They are typical common mode impedance options at 100 MHz. Selection also depends on frequency characteristics, DCR and the effect on the signal. Share the PHY and noise frequency range to identify a suitable part.

Can the 2012 family replace an isolation transformer or provide PoE capability?

Do not use it alone as an Ethernet isolation transformer. The current catalog lists this family for non-PoE designs; it does not authorize PoE use. Isolation and power-delivery capability require a separate review of the complete circuit.

Is the 2012 (0805) package label enough to define the footprint?

No. Check terminal numbering, recommended pads, spacing, tolerances and orientation. Use the datasheet and footprint for the same part. Do not substitute the footprint of a standard two-terminal 0805 resistor or capacitor.

Can I ask for sample support if I only know the required impedance?

Yes. Share the impedance and test frequency, PHY, application and quantity. Sales can involve FAE to review candidates. If the WHLC part number is already known, request pricing and samples directly.

Is VOOHU a 2012 common mode choke manufacturer?

Yes. VOOHU manufactures these 2012 common mode chokes in its own magnetics factory in Mianyang, China. The same factory builds the X’fmr+CMC chip LAN transformers listed under CHIP LAN, so both port styles come from one source.

How do I pick an impedance step for a 2012 common mode choke?

Start in the middle of the impedance range listed in the selector, for example WHLC-2012A-361T1 or WHLC-2012A-381T0. If emissions still fail, step up toward WHLC-2012A-102T0; if eye margin is short, step down toward WHLC-2012A-181T0. Take values and test frequency from each datasheet and confirm on the target board.

How do 2012 common mode chokes differ from the 3216 CHIP LAN components?

Both are Cap+CMC parts with a non-PoE label. The 2012 range is specified by common mode impedance and listed for 100/1000BASE-T; the 3216 CHIP LAN components are specified by inductance instead and are also listed for 2.5G/5G BASE-T.
