Which Protective Component Does Your Port Need?

When a surge or electrostatic discharge arrives, they conduct to divert the energy and clamp the voltage within a safe range. For high-speed data ports, focus on capacitance; for power and low-speed interfaces, focus on standoff voltage, clamping voltage and ESD rating.
Gas discharge tubes (GDT) conduct when the gas inside ionises, diverting high-energy surges with very low capacitance. Metal oxide varistors (MOV) limit voltage through their non-linear V–I characteristic. Both are commonly used for front-end surge protection and must be coordinated with downstream devices such as TVS diodes.
The right combination depends on the port type, normal operating voltage and the surge or ESD test level the design must pass. Protection performance also depends on layout and grounding.
