3 Electrode Gas Discharge Tubes
A shared centre electrode ties two protected lines to one ground, so when one side fires the other follows almost immediately. That keeps the residual voltage between the pair small, which is what balanced lines need. Confirm the pinout from the datasheet before layout.

FAQ
Gas discharge tube questions engineers ask
Answers cover how a GDT works, where it sits in a protection chain and its limits.
What does the third electrode achieve?
It gives both protected lines one common ground reference inside a single envelope. When one side breaks down, the ionised gas helps the other side fire almost immediately. The two lines therefore reach ground together, and the residual voltage between them stays small, which is what a balanced pair needs.
How is a 3 electrode GDT connected?
The centre electrode is normally the common ground and the two outer electrodes take the two protected lines. Confirm which pin is which from the datasheet for your specific part, rather than inferring it from the package, and keep the ground path short and wide.
What if the two lines have different working voltages?
A three-electrode part has one breakdown specification covering the whole device, so it suits two lines with similar conditions. If the two lines differ substantially, use separate two-electrode tubes sized individually, or send the conditions to our engineers to assess.
Is a 3 electrode part suitable for high-speed pairs?
Capacitance is low, so the loading is acceptable, and firing both legs together helps preserve balance. The tube is still slow with a non-zero arc voltage, so a high-speed port needs a faster clamping stage behind series impedance to handle the residual.
How do I request samples or a quote?
With a complete part number, send the part number, quantity, delivery region and the date you need it. If you are still selecting, send the line type, the working voltage of both lines and the surge standard you must meet, and a sales engineer will confirm candidates.
