Protective Component products
2 Electrode Gas Discharge Tubes
A two-electrode tube protects one line to ground. The two ends are symmetric, so there is no polarity to observe. Select a DC breakdown above the line working voltage, then keep the path to ground short and wide so stray inductance does not add overshoot.

FAQ
Gas discharge tube questions engineers ask
Answers cover how a GDT works, where it sits in a protection chain and its limits.
How is a 2 electrode GDT connected?
One end goes to the line being protected and the other to ground. The two ends are electrically symmetric, so there is no polarity to observe. Keep the path to ground as short and as wide as the layout allows, because stray inductance in that path adds voltage overshoot on a fast surge.
How many do I need for a multi-line port?
One two-electrode tube per line, each referenced to ground. If the lines form a balanced pair and you need them to fire together so the voltage between them stays small, compare a three-electrode part instead, which shares one ground electrode across both lines.
How do I pick the DC breakdown voltage?
Choose comfortably above the highest voltage the line reaches in normal service, including ripple, so the tube never fires during operation. Then confirm the impulse breakdown, which is considerably higher, does not exceed what the downstream circuit can withstand.
Will a 2 electrode GDT load my signal?
Barely. Capacitance is typically around one picofarad, far below a semiconductor clamp of comparable energy handling, which is why GDTs suit capacitance-sensitive lines. The tube is slow and its arc voltage is not zero, so a high-speed port still needs a faster second stage behind it.
How do I request samples or a quote?
With a complete part number, send the part number, quantity, delivery region and the date you need it. If you are still selecting, send the line type, working voltage and the surge standard you must meet, and a sales engineer will confirm candidates first.
Engineer support
Continue after product selection
Send the candidate part number and the condition you need reviewed. Sample support can be added after the selection is clear; commercial questions may be discussed in the same engineering conversation.
