Series overview
The JL2388 8-port Gigabit Ethernet PHY is an octal Ethernet transceiver between a QSGMII host and eight RJ45 ports on a switch or gateway main board. Buyers also search for it as an octal gigabit PHY or an 8-port gigabit PHY. It sits beside the JL2308 series, which lists identical selector values. Commercial and industrial grades are listed.
Every column matches JL2308: 8 ports, 1G, QSGMII, copper from 10BASE-T, no optical port, PC and PI grades and an LQFP128 package (see the datasheet for body dimensions). Only the part numbers differ, so compare features in the datasheets.
JL2388-PC is rated 0 °C to 70 °C for office and retail equipment; JL2388-PI covers −40 °C to +85 °C for street cabinets, rail and plant networks. Settle the grade before qualification testing.
The mode column reads QSGMII-COP: QSGMII toward the host and twisted-pair copper toward the cable, with ports listed from 10BASE-T up to 1G. No fiber mode is listed.

JL2388 appears wherever a QSGMII host needs eight copper gigabit ports.
Office access switches pair a switch SoC with one octal PHY for each group of eight front-panel RJ45 ports. JL2388-PC fits air-conditioned wiring closets.
Business routers and security gateways use a network processor with QSGMII and an 8-port Ethernet PHY for the LAN side, while the WAN port runs through its own PHY.
Traffic cabinets, rail-side and utility switches need JL2388-PI, rated −40 °C to +85 °C, because the enclosure temperature follows the weather.

What comes with the chip, larger switches and datasheet checks before layout.
They share port count, speed, host interface, package and temperature grades, so the headline figures will not separate them. The differences sit at feature level in their respective datasheets. Send your host controller and functional requirements and our engineers will identify which one fits.
A common package and pin count make a mechanical swap plausible but prove nothing electrically. Pin assignment, configuration and register behaviour are defined per device. Verify against both datasheets and re-test the link before treating one as a drop-in replacement for the other.
Enough to carry eight aggregated gigabit links over QSGMII. Check the host controller's QSGMII capability and its internal switching or forwarding capacity, because a host that accepts the interface may still not sustain the full aggregate throughput under load.
More than the package footprint suggests. Eight copper ports each need magnetics and a controlled impedance differential pair to the connector, plus the QSGMII lanes to the host. Plan the whole port area and the panel layout before placing the device.

Yes, with one chip for every eight ports. The limit is the host: it needs a QSGMII link for each group of four ports and the switching capacity for all of them.
Start with the QSGMII lane assignment, the reset and reference clock, and the LQFP128 land pattern. Then confirm the supply rails, since the selector lists no interface voltage, and the MDI pin order of each port.
