Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between D-Sub and DB9?

D-Sub names the family; DB9 is a common term for a 9-position interface, typically designated DE-9 by shell size. Specify gender, mounting style and mating dimensions as well.

Is every 15-position D-Sub connector a VGA connector?

No. Fifteen-position connectors have different density, row and shell arrangements, while VGA also specifies signal assignments. Equal contact count does not establish mechanical or electrical compatibility.

Where should I find the pinout for a 9-position D-Sub?

Use the connector drawing for contact numbering, viewing direction and PCB termination locations. Use the equipment or application circuit for RS-232, CAN or other signal assignments.

How should I choose right-angle or vertical D-Sub mounting?

Choose according to the mating axis relative to the PCB and panel, then verify the drawing view and mounting holes. Request clarification if catalog titles and orientation fields disagree.

Does the current rating allow every contact to carry the full rated current?

Do not infer that from a single rating. Check ambient temperature, wire or PCB conductor conditions, simultaneously loaded contacts and temperature-rise limits against the specification and system validation.

Does a metal D-Sub shell guarantee shielding performance?

The shell is one part of the shielding path. Review mating-shell contact, PCB or chassis connection, cable-shield termination and grounding, then validate the complete equipment.

Can I reuse another brand’s PCB footprint or outline?

Not on contact count or a similar outline alone. Terminal locations, retention legs, hole sizes, shell projection and screw positions may differ. Use the target part drawing or request a comparison.

How do I request D-Sub samples, pricing or a replacement assessment?

For a known part, send its number and quantity. For replacement, include the existing datasheet, mating plug and fixed PCB/panel dimensions. Early-stage projects can start with the interface requirements.
