How to select

A practical selection sequence

Narrow the published fields in sequence, compare the remaining candidates and verify the part-specific files before design-in.

  1. 01

    Define both ends

Identify the mating part and whether the rear interface is cable, PCB or adapter based.

  2. 02

    Check installation space

Check the part drawing for the panel cutout, thickness, mounting holes and cable clearance.

  3. 03

    Review retention and operating conditions

Review latch, internal locking or threaded retention and the part-specific electrical, environmental and mating requirements.

  4. 04

Validate a sample or request pricing

Check assembly and mating in the new design. If the part is known, send quantity and timing requirements directly.

Key selection parameters

What each filter helps you decide

01

Connection style

Distinguish feedthrough, PCB termination and adapter designs to define the rear connection.

02

Orientation and mounting dimensions

Check drawing datums, cutout, PCB holes and board-edge position; overall dimensions do not replace a mounting drawing.

03

Locking mechanism

Compare latch, internal locking and threaded retention against mating parts and access.

04

Mating durability

Read the cycle count with its test conditions; it is not a vibration or ingress rating.

05

Contact ratings and environment

Review current, voltage, temperature and humidity separately; connector shape does not establish system power capability.

Technical performance & application fit

Validate the complete design context

Application suitability is part-number specific. Treat the catalog fields as a shortlist, then confirm the design against the linked technical files.

Application review

Stage-lighting and professional equipment panels

  • Review latch access, the cable-side mating part and service clearance. Connector retention is not a substitute for equipment-level vibration validation.
Application review

Industrial equipment interfaces

  • Choose a panel or PCB arrangement and review grounding, cable routing and the equipment environment.

Category overview

Locking RJ45 connectors and where they earn their cost

A locking connector solves one specific problem: the standard RJ45 latch is the weakest part of the link.

01

What fails on a standard RJ45

The retention on an ordinary RJ45 is a small moulded plastic tab. It breaks, it snags when cables are pulled through, and under vibration it allows enough movement to produce intermittent contact. In an office that is an inconvenience. On a machine, a vehicle or a stage rig it is a fault that is hard to trace.

02

How the locking mechanism differs

A locking connector uses a metal shell with a positive mechanical latch, usually a bayonet or threaded arrangement, so the mated pair is held by the housing rather than by a plastic tab. The connection survives vibration and accidental pull on the cable, and it cannot be unplugged without a deliberate action.

03

The shell only shields if it is grounded

The metal housing gives the cable screen somewhere to terminate, which helps emissions and immunity. That only works if the panel mounting provides a defined low impedance path to chassis. A shell left floating, or bonded to signal ground, provides no shielding benefit and can make matters worse.

FAQ & related guides

Questions before design-in

These answers guide the page workflow. Part-specific engineering limits still come from the linked technical files.

Will a locking RJ45 receptacle accept any standard RJ45 plug?

Do not assume mating from the RJ45 name alone. Contact engagement, housing clearance and latch operation all need checking. Physical insertion does not necessarily provide locking or sealing; share the plug part number or drawing.

What is the difference between a 180° feedthrough and a 180° PCB-mount version?

A feedthrough connects front and rear interfaces; a PCB-mount version terminates to a circuit board. The same angle does not mean the same rear termination, mounting holes or panel position.

Which dimensions matter for a 90° locking RJ45 connector?

Check the panel cutout, mounting holes, front/rear projection, PCB pattern and board-edge position. Allow room for mating and cable bending; matching overall dimensions alone do not prove interchangeability.

Are all locking RJ45 connectors waterproof?

No. Retention and ingress protection are separate attributes. Check the selected part, required seals, mating state and installation conditions for an ingress-protected connection.

Can these parts directly replace another brand of locking RJ45 connector?

A review is required. Provide the existing part, plug/receptacle drawings, wiring and fixed installation constraints. FAE can propose candidates and explain differences before sample validation.

Where can I obtain a datasheet and PCB footprint?

Open the files listed for the selected part. If a PCB footprint is not available, request the relevant design data. A feedthrough outline is not a footprint for a PCB-mount version.

What should I check for a stage-lighting interface?

Check the equipment signal assignment, wiring, mating design and operating environment as well as retention. A suitable connector shape does not establish protocol compliance or equipment reliability.

How do I request locking RJ45 samples and a quote?

Send the part number, quantity, project stage, destination and required timing. If the part is not yet known, describe the mounting and mating requirements for support from sales engineering and FAE.
