Under proper use, a high-quality RJ45 coupler introduces an insertion loss typically <0.3 dB, with almost no effect on rates of 1 Gbps and below. However, a poor-quality coupler may cause wire-pair separation and impedance discontinuity (producing reflections) due to internal contact misalignment, shortening the effective transmission distance by 10-20 m. In 10 Gbps applications the coupler's impact is more significant; it is recommended to avoid using one or to choose a shielded CAT6A coupler, keeping total insertion loss within 1 dB.
Unshielded couplers are suitable for indoor short-distance cable joining and extension—low cost and small size. Shielded couplers (metal housing + internal shielding isolation) are suitable for environments with EMI/RFI interference such as industrial sites and outdoor cabinets; the metal housing can form a continuous shielding path with the shield of shielded cabling. Note: shielded cabling must be used at both ends, otherwise the shielded coupler may instead become an antenna.
A 4-conductor coupler connects only pins 1, 2, 3, 6 (the 2 differential pairs required for 100M Ethernet), while an 8-conductor full coupler connects all 8 pins. A 100M network (100BASE-TX) works with 4 conductors, but gigabit (1000BASE-T) must use 8 conductors. PoE power delivery also requires 8 conductors (powering over the data pairs or the spare pairs). It is recommended to standardize on 8-conductor full couplers to avoid compatibility issues.
A waterproof coupler is the intersection product of a coupler and a waterproof RJ45, used for through-wall mounting on a cabinet panel—outside the wall is the outdoor environment, inside is the indoor equipment. The design must satisfy two mutually exclusive needs at once: the internal pass-through contacts need precise alignment to ensure signal integrity, while the exterior needs to be completely sealed against water and dust.
Design principle of the double-layer sealing structure:
First layer (inner seal): the coupler interior uses an overmolding process, injection-molding the 8P8C contact assembly entirely within an elastomer (TPE/TPU), with plastic isolation walls separating wire pair from wire pair. This elastomer simultaneously serves to: seal the contact area to prevent moisture from seeping along the contact gaps; provide contact preload to ensure the contact force does not decay after long-term mating; and absorb vibration to reduce fretting wear.
Second layer (outer seal): an axial O-ring + locking nut seal is used between the coupler housing and the panel opening. When the locking nut is tightened, it compresses the O-ring into axial deformation, forming a face seal. The recommended panel opening is Φ22-24 mm with a surface roughness Ra ≤ 3.2 μm. The recommended tightening torque for the metal nut is 0.8-1.2 N·m.
PCB design key points: at the panel-mount socket end of the waterproof coupler, the PCB pins' differential-pair traces must maintain 100Ω impedance and equal-length control. Improper tightening torque of the waterproof gasket at the panel opening may deform the PCB, so it is recommended to add stiffening ribs on the back of the PCB or use a reinforced socket.
