IP67 means fully dust-tight and able to be briefly immersed at 1 m water depth for 30 minutes without water ingress, suitable for rain-exposed scenarios such as outdoor cabinets, charging piles, and security cameras. IP68 builds on IP67 and can work under higher water pressure / longer duration, but the specific conditions (depth, time, water temperature) are defined by the manufacturer and vary greatly—some products only pass 1.5 m / 1 hour, while others reach 5 m / 72 hours. When selecting, be sure to review the detailed test report and choose based on the device's actual maximum immersion depth.
No. You must use a dedicated three-piece waterproof modular plug (metal shielding shell + sealing tail sleeve + threaded locking structure). An ordinary modular plug cannot fit tightly with the waterproof sealing ring, nor can it clamp the cable jacket via the tail latch. Even a connector nominally rated "waterproof," when used with an ordinary plug, can only reach splash-proof level (around IP44) and completely loses its IP67 protection.
If the metal housing is not grounded, it becomes a floating conductor—on one hand, it picks up common-mode noise through capacitive coupling, causing radiated emissions to exceed limits or immunity to degrade; on the other hand, in lightning-surge testing, an ungrounded metal shell may cause internal discharge within the connector that breaks down the insulation. The metal housing must be reliably connected to the equipment chassis ground (PE).
