Featured: VOOHU's Peripheral Design Interface Chip Selection Guide

VOOHU Technical Team ·Published ·2 min read

At the hardware level, the PHY chip is a circuit that combines analog and digital technologies, and its main task is to receive the analog signals such as electrical signals or optical signals, and demodulate and convert them to the MAC chip. (The MAC chip is a chip composed entirely of digital circuits.)

The physical layer is responsible for setting the specific rules for data transmission and reception, including the electrical and optical signals used, the state of the lines, the synchronization of clocks, the way data is encoded, and the required circuit design. At the same time, the physical layer also provides a standard interface for devices at the data link layer. The chips that undertake these functions are called PHY chips.

In the seven-layer protocol of network communication, the PHY chip is responsible for implementing the lowest-level physical layer functions, that is, the transmission and reception of data.

1.PHY Architecture

In physical layer technology, the PCS (Physical Coding Sublayer) is responsible for encoding and decoding the data, and at the same time identifying the crossover characteristics and polarity of the four sets of data lines at the network port, as well as the delay error between them. The PMA (Physical Media Link Sublayer), on the other hand, focuses on eliminating signal reflections and crosstalk noise, restoring the clock frequency of the received signal, handling signal baseline drift, and optimizing channel inter-symbol interference. Further, the PMD (Physical Media Correlation Sublayer) undertakes the task of digital-to-analog signal conversion, drives the 100 ohm differential impedance at the end of the network cable, filters out the channel out-of-band noise, and implements echo suppression to ensure the stability and reliability of data transmission.

#2.PHY in board

The design and implementation of on-board PHYs is an important part of network technology, which directly affects the performance and reliability of network equipment. With the development of network technology, PHY is constantly being updated to support higher data transmission rates and a wider range of application scenarios

#3.Application Block

SGMII to Copper Application

As the core device of Ethernet peripheral circuits, PHY Transceiver needs to select the appropriate PHY chip according to the actual application.

VOOHU Electronics and Jinglue Technology have reached a strategic cooperation to combine the advantages of technology, market and customer service of both parties to provide customers with better solutions. Next, I will give you a detailed explanation of the selection guide of Waltiger's electronic peripheral interface chips, so as to help you accurately select and improve the performance of your device.
