SFP Connectors, Cages & Assemblies

Select host-side pluggable I/O components for switches and networking equipment: cages, PCB receptacle connectors, or cage-and-connector assemblies. Browse SFP/SFP+, SFP28 and QSFP families, then compare port layout, mounting, light-pipe and thermal options. These are host-side components, not optical transceivers.

How to select

A practical selection sequence

Narrow the published fields in sequence, compare the remaining candidates and verify the part-specific files before design-in.

  1. 01

    Define component type and family

Specify a cage, PCB receptacle or assembly, then identify the target SFP or QSFP family.

  2. 02

    Choose port layout and mounting

Review 1×N/2×N layout against the panel, PCB and press-fit or solder process.

  3. 03

    Review accessories and system conditions

Confirm the supplied light pipes and heat sinks, module power, airflow and grounding.

  4. 04

    Validate mechanical and electrical integration

Validate fit, signal and thermal conditions using the part-specific documents before moving to production sourcing.

Key selection parameters

What each filter helps you decide

01

Pluggable I/O component type

Distinguish cage, PCB receptacle and integrated assembly to define the purchase.

02

Form factor

SFP/SFP+/SFP28/QSFP identify interface families, not dimensions in millimeters.

03

Port configuration

Check rows, ports per row, panel and PCB drawings together.

04

PCB mounting method

Review PCB and process requirements separately for press-fit and solder mounting.

05

Light pipes and thermal features

Check legends, positions, module power and airflow, and confirm accessory inclusion.

Technical performance & application fit

Validate the complete design context

Application suitability is part-number specific. Treat the catalog fields as a shortlist, then confirm the design against the linked technical files.

Application review

Network-switch host interfaces

  • Select for port density, target module and PCB constraints; do not infer system data rate from a cage name.
Application review

Communications equipment and interconnects

  • Review panel retention, EMI contacts, light-pipe visibility and airflow.

Category overview

Reading SFP part descriptions: family, array and build

Most of the confusion in this category comes from three separate things being encoded in one part description.

01

The family ladder

SFP, SFP+ and SFP28 share a mechanical form factor and differ in the data rate they are qualified for. The QSFP line, QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP56 and QSFP-DD, is a physically larger four-lane form factor. A mechanical fit between two of these proves nothing about signal integrity at your rate.

02

What the array notation means

A figure such as 1x1, 1x4, 2x1 or 2x5 describes how the ports are arranged, rows first and columns second. A ganged row and a stacked column with the same port count need completely different panel cutouts and board footprints, so read it before the panel is laid out.

03

Cage, connector, or both, plus the build

Parts are supplied as a cage alone, a PCB receptacle alone, or the two together. On top of that sit press-fit or solder tails, optional heat sinks and light pipes, and a stated contact plating thickness. Each affects the assembly process and long-term contact reliability, so specify them all.

FAQ & related guides

Questions before design-in

These answers guide the page workflow. Part-specific engineering limits still come from the linked technical files.

What is the difference between an SFP cage, connector and assembly?

A cage provides mounting and shielding, a PCB receptacle provides the electrical interface, and an assembly combines them. A cage purchase does not automatically include a connector or heat sink; check the part BOM.

Are these SFP connectors optical transceivers?

No. This page covers host-side connectors, cages and assemblies. An optical transceiver is a functional module inserted into the interface; wavelength and transmission distance are not connector specifications here.

Can SFP, SFP+ and SFP28 parts be interchanged because they look similar?

Not on appearance alone. Review interface requirements, connector construction and electrical performance, port layout, module and PCB design. Assess replacement at part and system level.

Can a 1×2 ganged layout and a 2×1 stacked layout use the same cutout?

Equal port count does not establish interchangeability. Array orientation, panel opening, mounting holes and height differ; use the drawing for the selected part.

How do I choose press-fit or solder-tail cages?

Choose for the PCB hole construction, assembly equipment, process window and rework needs. Press-fit requires the specified holes and support; solder-tail parts need a confirmed soldering process, not an assumed reflow capability.

Does a cage with a heat sink guarantee module cooling?

No. Validate against module power, thermal contact, ambient temperature and airflow. Confirm heat-sink inclusion, dimensions and retention for the selected part.

Where can I get SFP pinout and PCB footprint information?

Use the connector drawing for terminal numbering, holes and viewing direction, and the target interface/module documentation for system signal assignments. Download the part-specific files or request missing data; do not substitute a generic pinout.

What should I provide for SFP samples, pricing or replacement?

For a known part, provide quantity, accessories, project stage and timing. For replacement, add existing drawings and PCB/panel constraints. For new selection, start with component type, family, port layout and thermal needs.
