A combined inductor is a device that integrates multiple inductor units in a single package, commonly as an integrated structure designed for multiphase power delivery or coupled applications. Compared with multiple discrete inductors, it saves PCB area, simplifies layout, and ensures parameter consistency across the units.

Where are combined inductors typically used?
A

They are mainly used in multiphase DC-DC power supplies (such as multiphase VRMs for CPUs/GPUs) and other high-current applications such as server and switch motherboard power delivery, as well as in filter or coupling circuits that require highly matched inductor parameters.

What electrical advantages do combined/coupled inductors offer over discrete inductors in multiphase power supplies?
A

Beyond saving space, coupled inductors use the magnetic coupling between phases to reduce the ripple current of each phase without sacrificing transient response - effectively providing higher inductance in steady state and lower inductance during transients - thereby improving efficiency, reducing the number of output capacitors, and improving voltage droop performance under load steps.

Beyond the usual inductance, Isat, Irms, and DCR, also pay attention to: inductance consistency and DCR matching between units (which affect current sharing among phases), the interphase coupling coefficient and leakage inductance (which affect ripple cancellation), crosstalk and isolation between units, and the overall heat dissipation path of the package under high current. It is recommended to match these against the multiphase design parameters recommended by the main controller (PWM controller) vendor.
