FAQ LAN Transformer: WHSG24301TG

What equipment is the WHSG24301TG suited to?

The WHSG24301TG suits Gigabit ports where the component temperature may fall anywhere between -40 °C and +85 °C and board clearance is no more than 2.85 mm. Typical uses are outdoor access points, network boards for vehicles and rail, wide-temperature industrial gateways, and edge equipment in height-restricted enclosures.

The WHSG24301TG is a single-port, non-PoE low-profile 100/1000 BASE-T transformer, so the port has to be powered locally, and the lower temperature is the operating limit of the component rather than a demonstrated cold-start capability for the finished product. Other options are listed in the 100/1000 BASE-T range.

Can the centre taps of the WHSG24301TG carry current?

No. The datasheet assigns no DC balance current capability to the centre taps of the WHSG24301TG, so they cannot be used as a supply path. The four centre taps come out on pins 3 and 4, 9 and 10, 15 and 16, and 21 and 22, named TXCT and TDCT, and should be terminated according to the reference design for the target PHY.

The schematic prints no cable-side or chip-side labels, so wiring must follow the pin numbers on the drawing rather than the net-name prefix, which is not consistent from one VOOHU part to the next. Where the port has to deliver power, send us the target wattage, current and temperature range and we will reselect from the 100/1000 BASE-T range.

How do I choose between the WHSG24301TG and the WHSG24301G?

Take the WHSG24301TG when the range has to reach -40 °C to +85 °C, accepting that maximum height rises from 2.50 mm to 2.85 mm; take the WHSG24301G where 0 °C to +70 °C is enough, since it is both lower and cheaper. The suggested land pattern, lead span and pin-to-net assignment are identical value for value, as is every electrical figure, so no board change is involved.

Two further points affect production: the lead pitch tolerance on the WHSG24301TG is the wider of the two, so use its own figure when assessing placement capability, and its reel quantity differs from the other parts in the same package.
