The transformer isolates the PHY from the cable and couples the TX and RX differential pairs to the RJ45 jack.
Center-tap biasing on the PHY side depends on the PHY type (voltage-mode or current-mode).

FAQ LAN Transformer: WHSM24002G
What equipment is the WHSM24002G suitable for?
The WHSM24002G suits indoor 10G data ports where the component temperature stays between 0 °C and +70 °C. Typical uses are switch uplinks, server NICs, NAS units and workstation ports. It is a single-port, non-PoE 10G BASE-T transformer, so the port has to be powered locally.
If the equipment must power up below 0 °C or work outdoors long term, move to the wide-temperature version. Other options are listed in the 10G BASE-T range.
Can the centre taps of the WHSM24002G carry current?
No. The datasheet assigns no DC balance current capability to the centre taps of the WHSM24002G, so they cannot be used as a supply path. Terminate them according to the reference design for the target PHY.
How do I choose between the WHSM24002G and the WHSM24002TG?
Decide on temperature: take the WHSM24002TG for -40 °C to +85 °C, or the WHSM24002G where 0 °C to +70 °C is enough. The two are electrically identical – same OCL, DCR, segmented insertion and return loss, crosstalk and common-mode rejection.
Both quote common-mode rejection as -20 dB typ, below the -25 dB typ used by most parts in this range, so take the figure from the part you are actually fitting when running a worst-case analysis. Switching between the two does not change the electrical design.
