2.5G & 5G Ethernet Transformers

Choose multi-gigabit LAN transformers for 2.5GBASE-T or 5GBASE-T copper interfaces. Compare port, package and PoE options for projects such as switch access ports and wireless AP uplinks. Confirm the required modes against the target PHY and full part documentation; 5G here refers to Ethernet, not cellular communications.

Series overview

2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformer options

These 2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformers, also called multi-gigabit Ethernet transformers, serve 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T copper ports (NBASE-T links) such as switch access ports and Wi-Fi access point uplinks. Like Gigabit magnetics they use all four pairs, but they are specified over a wider frequency range. Most parts here are SMD, in single-, dual- and quad-port versions with non-PoE, PoE+, PoE++ and 4PPoE options. For 1000BASE-T or 10GBASE-T ports, compare Gigabit Ethernet transformers or 10G Ethernet transformers.

01

Single-port 24-pin parts

WHSQ24701G (1.27 mm pitch) and WHSQ24015G (1.0 mm pitch) are single-port 2.5G Ethernet transformers in 24-pin packages. The pitch differs between families, so check the footprint before treating two parts as alternatives.

02

Dual-port and quad-port modules

WHSQ48002G covers two ports in a 48-pin SMD body. For higher port density, WHDQ96504P2 is a quad-port module in a 96-pin DIP package.

03

PoE on multi-gigabit ports

PoE ratings include PoE+ up to 720 mA, as on WHSQ24015P1, 4PPoE versions, and PoE++ up to 1,800 mA on WHDQ96504P2. Read multi-port ratings as specified rather than multiplying them across ports.

04

Industrial temperature

Commercial 0 to 70 °C and industrial −40 to +85 °C grades are both available; WHSQ24015P1 is an industrial-grade PoE+ example. When you ask for a part check, state whether the port runs at 2.5G, 5G or both, because a 5G LAN transformer is checked over a wider frequency range.

Applications

Where 2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformers are used

Multi-gigabit copper ports appear where a Gigabit link has become the bottleneck but the installed cabling has to stay.

Wireless

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 access points

Access point uplinks moved to 2.5G and 5G to carry faster wireless traffic over existing Cat5e or Cat6 cabling. PoE-rated parts such as WHSQ24015P1 or WHSQ24706-2PTG let the access point take its power from the same port.

Networking

Multi-gigabit switches and routers

Access switches and home, small-office and gaming routers add 2.5G ports. Dual-port 48-pin modules such as WHSQ48002G and the quad-port WHDQ96504P2, rated PoE++ up to 1,800 mA, save space on multi-port boards.

Computing and storage

NAS, PCs and edge devices

Network-attached storage, desktop and edge computers place a single-port 24-pin 2.5G Ethernet transformer such as WHSQ24701G next to the 2.5G PHY.

Sourcing

Buying 2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformers from VOOHU

VOOHU is a manufacturer of LAN transformers, with its own magnetics factory in Mianyang. Datasheets, 3D models and PCB footprints are published for the 2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformers on this page, so you can shortlist parts here and then request samples or a quotation.

01

Samples and quotations

Samples are available for evaluation, and selected parts are free of charge. Our FAE team will be glad to confirm the options for your project. For a quotation, send the part numbers, quantity and target production date; typical lead time is 7–10 days.

02

2.5G LAN transformer replacement

To replace an imported multi-gigabit part, send its part number, datasheet and target PHY, and say whether the port runs at 2.5G, 5G or both. Our FAE team compares the pinout, electrical data and footprint, then suggests VOOHU replacement candidates for you to validate with samples.

03

Quality and compliance

VOOHU is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, and its LAN transformers are RoHS and REACH compliant (third-party test reports). Since 2018 the company has supplied more than 1,500 customers, including 150+ listed companies.

FAQ & related guides

Questions about 2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformers

Answers on cabling, PoE, PHY matching, datasheets and ordering. Part-specific limits always come from the datasheet.

Can a Gigabit transformer be upgraded to 2.5G or 5G without a board change?

Not as a general guarantee. Although these interfaces use four data pairs, the target PHY, loss requirements, internal structure and PCB signal performance still need review. Share the original part, target PHY and no-board-change constraints for an FAE assessment and sample validation. Matching pin count is not sufficient.

Can one Ethernet transformer be used for both 2.5G and 5G?

Parts designated 2.5G/5G in this range can be candidates when both modes are needed. Suitability for your PHY and circuit must still be checked against the complete specification and reference design. If the product must operate at multiple rates, state all target modes together so they can be reviewed and included in sample validation.

Can a typical specification be treated as a worst-case guarantee?

No. A typical value is different from a minimum or maximum limit. For example, WHSQ24015P1 lists crosstalk and common-mode rejection as typical values; do not rewrite them as guaranteed limits. If the design needs worst-case or temperature-specific data, provide the test conditions for FAE review.

Can the PoE current for WHDQ96504P2 simply be multiplied by its four ports?

Do not infer that. The current datasheet lists 900 mA DC balanced current for each channel and 1800 mA for full channels. Confirm the applicable grouping within this quad-port module against the schematic with FAE. Do not multiply the figure by port count or confuse it with the 21 mA DC bias used for the OCL test.

What should I provide when selecting magnetics for a PoE wireless AP?

Start with the target PHY, 2.5G or 5G uplink requirement, PSE/PD role, power needs and available PCB space. An existing part number is also useful. You can start a discussion before all information is complete. Request samples after shortlisting, or pricing directly when the part and quantity are known.

Is VOOHU a 2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformer manufacturer?

Yes. VOOHU manufactures LAN transformers, including the 2.5G and 5G Ethernet transformers on this page, in its own magnetics factory in Mianyang, China. Datasheets, 3D models and PCB footprints are published for these part numbers.

Do 2.5G and 5G Ethernet ports need new cabling?

Usually not. 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T (NBASE-T) were defined to reuse installed Cat5e and Cat6 cabling. The transformer is only one part of the channel, so check the PHY, the RJ45 jack and the cable together; our FAE team can review the port design.

Where can I download a 2.5G Ethernet transformer datasheet?

Use the file finder in the downloads section: search by part number to get the datasheet, 3D model and PCB footprint. The datasheet shows the schematic, dimensions and electrical limits you need for design review.
