FAQ LAN Transformer: WHDG72K01G
WHDG72K01G or the bar-shaped 72-pin quad part — how is the choice made?
By the shape of the area the PCB can free up: the WHDG72K01G is a 34.50 × 19.00 mm block, the bar parts are 65.70 × 6.50 mm, and the two occupy completely different board footprints.
On height the WHDG72K01G is 13.50 mm Max against 12.00 mm Max for the bar; the hole size is ø0.70 mm against ø0.90 mm. Four RJ45s spread along one edge suit the bar; connectors grouped in a corner suit the block.
What is the difference between the WHDG72K01G and the WHDG72K01TG?
Land pattern, pin assignment, internal element order and electrical ratings are all the same; two temperature fields differ — the WHDG72K01G is rated 0 °C to +70 °C operating and -20 °C to +125 °C storage, the WHDG72K01TG -40 °C to +85 °C and -40 °C to +125 °C.
Both cold limits move: 40 °C on the operating end, 20 °C on the storage end.
The WHDG72K01G lists +125 °C storage — does that mean it can run hot?
No. Storage temperature covers unpowered storage and transport; powered operation is governed by the operating range, and on the WHDG72K01G that is 0 °C to +70 °C.
The two fields are unusually far apart on this part (storage runs -20 °C to +125 °C), and designing thermals against the storage limit puts the part straight outside its rating. The number that matters is the temperature at the transformer's own location, not the cabinet ambient. Wide-temperature grades are listed in the 100/1000 BASE-T range.
