FAQ LAN Transformer: WHS16037TG
What is the difference between the WHS16037TG and the WHS16037-2KG?
Land pattern, outline and internal structure are identical; each upgrades a different axis — the WHS16037TG upgrades temperature, the WHS16037-2KG upgrades isolation.
The WHS16037TG is rated -40 °C to +85 °C and keeps the standard 1500 VAC isolation grade; the other raises isolation to 2500 VAC and keeps the 0 °C to +70 °C range. Every other item matches. In other words, wide temperature rules out 2500 VAC and vice versa, which is a decision to take early in selection.
When is the WHS16037TG the necessary choice?
Where the transformer's own location powers up below 0 °C, or runs above +70 °C for long stretches.
The deciding figure is the temperature at the part's location, not the cabinet or room ambient — a surface-mount part sits on the board surface and runs well above inlet temperature near a power supply or downstream in the airflow. 100M ports are common in small industrial equipment: fanless gateways, DIN-rail modules, outdoor front ends. The WHS16037TG is rated -40 °C to +85 °C; other grades sit in the 10/100 BASE-T range.
Does the WHS16037TG support PoE?
No. The WHS16037TG is a non-PoE part: its centre taps serve only as AC termination and common-mode reference and carry no DC supply current.
The 8 mA in the datasheet is the DC bias applied while measuring open-circuit inductance, not current available for powering anything. A port that has to deliver power over the cable needs a part whose datasheet states a current capability and the applicable IEEE class, chosen at selection time. PoE-rated parts are grouped in the Gigabit range.
