The transformer isolates the PHY from the cable and couples the TX and RX differential pairs to the RJ45 jack.
Center-tap biasing on the PHY side depends on the PHY type (voltage-mode or current-mode).

FAQ LAN Transformer: WHSM24P02-1PG
Does the WHSM24P02-1PG support IEEE 802.3at (PoE+)?
Yes. The WHSM24P02-1PG datasheet states "IEEE802.3at compliant performance – 720mA Current Capability", and that 720 mA is the capability of each magnetic channel's centre tap. Size four balanced copper paths against 720 mA each, taking the width from your actual copper thickness and permitted rise.
For a port-level total on the WHSM24P02-1PG, confirm the figure with us before design freeze rather than multiplying 720 mA by the number of channels.
Can the common-mode rejection figure of the WHSM24P02-1PG be carried over from other 10G parts in the same range?
No. The WHSM24P02-1PG quotes common-mode rejection as -20 dB typ from 1 to 500 MHz, 5 dB below the -25 dB typ used by most parts in this speed class. Both are typical values rather than limits, so neither belongs in a worst-case budget as it stands.
Carrying a figure across from another part number would understate the margin by a further 5 dB. Take the number from the part you are actually fitting, and if the project has to sign off against guaranteed limits, raise it during selection of the 10G BASE-T part.
The WHSM24P02-1PG only operates to +70 °C — can it go in an outdoor enclosure?
Not recommended. The WHSM24P02-1PG operates from 0 °C to +70 °C, and the inside of an outdoor enclosure in direct sun regularly exceeds that ceiling. Its -40 °C to +85 °C storage range is what the part survives unpowered and cannot be used as an operating condition.
For a wide-temperature 10G powered port, move to a part whose operating range covers -40 °C to +85 °C, such as the WHSM24015T0. If the target PoE class is higher than that part provides, send us the per-port current and temperature you need and we will reselect.
