FAQ LAN Transformer: WHSM24P02N0
Does the WHSM24P02N0 support PoE?
No. The datasheet assigns no DC balance current capability to the centre taps of the WHSM24P02N0, so they cannot be used as a supply path. The WHSM24P02N0 handles signal transformation and isolation for a 10G BASE-T port, and power for the port has to come from the equipment itself.
If the port must run wide-temperature and also deliver power, move to a part that publishes a DC balance current figure, such as the WHSM24015T0. If the target current is higher than that part provides, send us the per-port current and temperature you need and we will reselect.
What equipment is the WHSM24P02N0 suitable for?
The WHSM24P02N0 suits industrial 10G data ports where the component temperature may fall anywhere between -40 °C and +85 °C. Typical uses are industrial switches, 10G uplinks inside outdoor enclosures, wide-temperature edge computing units and factory-floor gateways. The WHSM24P02N0 carries no PoE rating, so the port is powered by the equipment itself.
Note that -40 °C is the component's lower operating limit, not a demonstrated cold-start capability for the finished product – low-temperature power-up still has to be measured with the target PHY and cable. Other options are in the 10G BASE-T range.
How do I choose between the WHSM24P02N0 and the WHSM24P01N0?
On the criteria that drive selection the WHSM24P02N0 and the WHSM24P01N0 are interchangeable: both operate from -40 °C to +85 °C, share the same storage range, neither supports PoE, and the electrical block is the same. The one documented difference is in the reflow note.
The WHSM24P02N0 measures the dwell within 3 °C of the actual peak, where most parts in this speed class state 5 °C, so check your line profile against the tighter of the two. Where both parts qualify, decide on availability and on what is already in the bill of materials.
