How to Choose an Industrial PCB RJ45 Jack: Seven Constraints That Decide the Part

VOOHU Technical Team ·Published ·7 min read

Choosing an industrial PCB RJ45 jack starts from the constraint the application imposes, not from the application name. Seven constraints decide most choices: vibration and cable retention, sealing and condensation, shielding and grounding, panel space, PoE current and heat, LED visibility, and field replacement. Each points to a parameter to check, such as mounting style, shield tabs or integrated magnetics, and to a jack family. VOOHU offers standard, low height and combination RJ45 jacks with or without integrated magnetics, plus locking and waterproof RJ45 connectors. Our FAE team can check a shortlist against your enclosure and PHY.

#Does it matter what RJ45 connector you use?

On a board it does. The jack fixes the footprint, the shield path to the chassis, the LED pins and, in an RJ45 jack with integrated magnetics (often called a MagJack), the magnetics too. The SYT111Q066AA2A1D and SYT111Q334AB2A2DP057 are both 1×1, tab-down gigabit MagJacks. Yet the first has 10 signal and power pins and the second has 14, adding PoE center-tap pins 11 to 14, so their footprints are not interchangeable.

#Which seven constraints decide an RJ45 jack choice?

Each constraint below gives the rule, what to check in the datasheet and where to go next.

1. Vibration and cable retention: how do you stop link drop-outs on moving equipment?

On machine and robot controllers, vehicles and rail equipment, intermittent links often start at the mated interface or the solder joints, because the cable levers on the jack. Hold the cable near the port so the shield tabs and housing, not the signal pins, carry the load.

The through-hole SYT561188AB1A1DB4, for example, has 2 × Ø1.60 mm shield-tab holes and 2 × Ø3.20 mm post holes beside its eight signal pins.

2. Outdoor and cabinet installs: are there waterproof RJ45 connectors?

Yes, but the seal is made at the enclosure wall, not by the board jack, whose mating face is open. Outdoor equipment, washdown machines and roadside or solar cabinets usually combine a sealed panel interface with an ordinary board jack behind it. An ingress rating such as IP67 (dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion, as defined in IEC 60529) applies to the connector correctly mounted and mated.

  • Check the docking type and matching plug, the panel thickness range, the cable category and the temperature range.
  • Condensation is separate. Cold-chain gateways and cabinets that cycle through the dew point need drainage or venting, because a sealed connector does not remove moisture already inside.
  • Compare waterproof RJ45 connectors, and read waterproof RJ45 selection for industrial equipment.

3. Shielding and grounding: do you need shielded RJ45 connectors?

Choose a shielded jack when the cable is shielded, the product has a metal chassis or panel, or the port sits near drives, motors or switchgear, as in substation gateways, machine vision and analyzers. EMI fingers on the shell touch the panel opening and bond the shield at the front.

The SYT59A31882201221101, for example, has EMI fingers on a 0.20 mm nickel-plated brass shell. Both versions exist in one series: the SYT561188HWA1DB4 has a metal shell, and the SYT561188IWD1DY1027 is all-plastic.

For grounding layouts, see shielded vs unshielded RJ45 connectors. For long outdoor runs, see Ethernet port surge protection design.

4. Panel space and port density: low profile, combination or a different latch orientation?

  • Height between board and lid: low height RJ45 connectors suit signage players, mini PCs and slim DIN-rail gateways.
  • Panel width: edge switches can use ganged 1×n or stacked 2×n jacks from the RJ45 connector range. Where USB sits beside Ethernet, an RJ45 combination connector shares one right-angle body.
  • The edge that faces the user: tab-up and tab-down jacks are mirror images, so a swap changes the pair order and LED pins. In stacked jacks the top port latches up and the bottom port latches down. See RJ45 tab up vs tab down.
  • Check the panel cutout: 16.30 × 13.75 mm (reference) on the SYT111B002BA2A1D.

5. PoE: which RJ45 connector for PoE, and how much heat will it see?

PoE power is injected or extracted at the center taps of the magnetics, so the PoE rating belongs to the magnetics, not to the jack itself. With discrete LAN or PoE transformers on the board, the transformer carries the rating. With the magnetics inside the jack, choose a MagJack with a stated PoE rating, then check the IEEE standard, the current figure and multi-port temperature rise.

  • The SYT111Q334AB2A2DP057 datasheet states PoE magnetics to IEEE 802.3at for PSE or PD applications. It lists 600 mA max balanced DC line current; 57 V DC continuous. The cable-side center taps are on pins 11 to 14.
  • For multi-port switches and PoE access points, our FAE team can check the current per pair set against your PoE type and review the thermal path on your board.

6. LED visibility: does the RJ45 jack need LED indicators, and where should they sit?

If the port is read from the front panel, as on POS terminals, signage players and test sets, put the LEDs in the jack and pick the orientation that keeps them visible. On the tab-up SYT561188AB1A1DB4 the LEDs sit in the upper corners; on tab-down parts such as the SYT59A31882201221101 they sit in the lower corners, next to the board.

LED colors (G/Y, Y/G, GO/Y or none) and pins vary by part. The SYT111Q066AA2A1D drives green from pin 11 to 12 and yellow from 14 to 13; the SYT111Q334AB2A2DP057 uses 15 to 16 and 17 to 18.

7. Field replacement: how do you keep an RJ45 port serviceable?

Retail terminals, parcel lockers, traffic and elevator cabinets and test fixtures are repaired on site. Keep the footprint and latch orientation stable across revisions, and choose parts with a datasheet, 3D model and footprint. Where the port is replugged at every visit, read the durability line. The SYT561188AB1A1DB4 datasheet gives 750 mating cycles, with contact resistance of 30 mΩ max per contact and 50 mΩ max after the life test.

  • On test fixtures that are replugged all day, a panel-mount RJ45 inline coupler, wired to the board jack with a short patch cable, can act as the replaceable wear part.
  • To replace the magnetics separately or second-source the jack, compare integrated and discrete RJ45 designs first.

#Frequently asked questions

What are industrial RJ45 connectors?

They keep the standard 8P8C interface but are built for vibration, dirt, electrical noise and wide temperatures. Typical features are a metal shell bonded to the chassis, EMI fingers, a locking latch, a sealed panel interface and an industrial temperature range, such as −40 to +85 °C on the SYT111Q066AA2A1D.

Are there waterproof RJ45 connectors with integrated magnetics?

The usual approach is to seal at the enclosure wall and keep the magnetics on the board. Our waterproof RJ45 range covers bulkhead adapters, couplers, pin-header adapters, sealing caps and cable assemblies. The board jack behind the panel can be a standard jack or a MagJack, and our FAE team can confirm a pairing for your enclosure.

Do I need shielded RJ45 connectors?

You need one when the cable is shielded, the chassis is metal or strong noise sources sit nearby, and the shell can be bonded to chassis ground over a short path. In a plastic enclosure with unshielded cable, an unshielded jack is often enough. See shielded vs unshielded RJ45 connectors.

Does a plain RJ45 jack support PoE?

Not by itself. A jack without magnetics provides neither PoE nor isolation. On a PoE port, the PoE rating comes from the discrete LAN or PoE transformer on the board, and the jack passes the current through to the cable. Our FAE team can check the complete PoE path for your PoE type.
